Today’s PrimalMed Prescription…What is PrimalMed?
Take a step back and see what’s in YOUR toolbox
Here’s the logo…
And here’s the song…
So the other day, I’m watching the 2021 Peter Jackson documentary series on the Beatles. The fab four had meandered and were determined to get back in to the studio and return to their roots and rediscover the simple joy of creating music, raw and unplugged. A journey back to their Primal and Ancestral roots.
So I got to thinking, “What is PrimalMed?” Yes, it is a path to understand and achieve metabolic health with observations and musings as seen through the lens of a radiologist. Yes, it is a path to Nutrition and Wellness approached from an ancestral perspective.
But most importantly, PrimalMed is a TOOL. It can be YOUR tool.
You see that spear in the logo? It is not a call for us to set out and hunt down some bison for our next meal. It is not a call to solely embrace a particular lifestyle of carnivory or any other restrictive way of life.
No, no, no!
The spear is simply a TOOL. It was an essential tool that ancestral man utilized to allow for his survival. It might be for hunting. It might be for fishing. It might be for protecting his family and tribe. It was a tool to allow him/her to not only survive but to THRIVE. It was a tool that allowed him to evolve to the next level and become the strongest, most resilient version of himself.
The PrimalMed spear is a METAPHOR that refers to using the tools that are discussed in Your PrimalMed Prescription that enable individual responsibility to embrace ancestral principles of nutrition and movement.
To use those tools to help us be the best versions of ourselves.
PrimalMed is a concept. It is a mindset. It is a lifestyle. It is a BRAND. It is a template to use that allows us to give our bodies the inputs that our genes expect from an ancestral perspective.
Plant based? Animal Based? Who cares as long as it emphasizes minimally processed whole food. Let’s not call it a diet. Let’s call it Nutrition. Let’s give our cells the inputs they expect and need. At the end of the day, it’s protein, to build and maintain lean body mass and carbohydrates and fats to provide energy or cellular fuel. It’s nutritional biochemistry.
Exercise? Let’s call it Movement. Our bodies and genes expect us to move. That means different things to different folks. Getting your keister out of the chair and running a 5k? Awesome. Walking daily and throwing in some PrimalMed pushups? Also awesome. Chasing the kids around the house? Those are primal, compound movements! PrimalMed approved!
The other pillars of health such as sleep optimization and stress mitigation have been discussed before. The importance of strong community has been discussed before.
I should add that another PrimalMed pillar is nutritional supplementation and pharmaceutical intervention WHEN necessary. We do not live in 5000 BC. We live in the 21st century. For some, despite the best lifestyle modifications, medical interventions under the supervision of a licensed professional are necessary.
There is WAY too much information online on the socials or newsfeeds about what to do and what not to do. A lot of it is filler and rubbish! Should I eat this or eat that? Should I be doing burpees and HIIT workouts daily or simply running and walking? Too much conflicting input and the computer crashes!
We ALL need a tool. I know that the PrimalMed readers are smart, curious, and can think for themselves. They can read this newsletter and see what makes sense for THEM.
So grab that spear, that PrimalMed spear, and use it as YOUR tool to not just survive, but to THRIVE. Put PrimalMed in YOUR toolbox.
Use it whether you hunt at Whole Foods or gather at the local Farmer’s Market. Use it when you walk with a friend. Use it when you plank, push and squat. Carry a little PrimalMed with you all day long.
Today’s homework assignment? I encourage us all to reread some past posts and see what resonates. What was your favorite post? Your favorite tune?
